Anonomi Messenger has two official Android channels, both listed on this page.
Do not trust re-packaged APKs, re-hosted binaries, or links shared in chats.

Android

Section titled “Android”

Both official channels ship APKs signed with the same key. You can install from one and update from the other without uninstalling or losing your account.

Signing certificate SHA-256:

0c42c2a2e9be889eef2e7da10e8cd9cc71e6e6bc0e676fc994a8066d1766cb8d

The certificate name reads CN=anonchat, an earlier name for the project. This is expected.

F-Droid

Section titled “F-Droid”

F-Droid rebuilds Anonomi Messenger from source, compares the result against the binary we publish, and ships our APK with our signature — not one signed by F-Droid. You do not have to trust F-Droid as a third party: the signature you install is ours.

The F-Droid client also notifies you when a new version is available. The direct download does not.

Over Tor. F-Droid mirrors its repository as an onion service:

Add it as a mirror in the F-Droid client with Orbot running, or fetch the APK from it directly. No clearnet access is required.

GitHub Releases

The direct-download build, published by us.

Each release includes:

  • APK file
  • Version number
  • Changelog
  • SHA-256 checksum

Which one to choose

Section titled “Which one to choose”

The app code is identical. The difference is the offline kit.

The direct-download build bundles companion apps — Anonomi Postbox, Monerujo, Tor Browser and Orbot — as assets, so one device can hand the whole toolkit to others over the offline hotspot with no internet at all. That bundle is why it is roughly twice the size.

The F-Droid build ships no third-party APKs, because F-Droid builds everything from source and does not accept prebuilt binaries. Offline sharing still works and still hands out Anonomi Messenger itself, but not the companion apps.

Choose the direct download if you need to prepare other devices offline. Otherwise F-Droid is the simpler option.

Verifying authenticity

Before installing, verify that the file is authentic.

The strongest check is the signature, not the file hash. Both channels use the certificate above, and it stays the same from one release to the next.

If you compare checksums, compare against the right channel. The two builds are different files, so their SHA-256 checksums differ. A checksum from a GitHub release will not match an APK installed from F-Droid. That mismatch is expected and does not mean either build has been tampered with.

Recommended steps:

  1. Download the APK from one of the official channels above
  2. Compare the published checksum for that channel
  3. Or check the signing certificate, which is the same for both

Verification is especially important if you:

  • Operate in a hostile network
  • Are targeted by surveillance or malware
  • Received the download link from a third party

Updates

Section titled “Updates”

Anonomi Messenger does not use automatic background updates from centralized servers.

If you installed from GitHub Releases, you are responsible for checking and installing updates. Releases are published deliberately and announced through official channels.

If you installed from F-Droid, the client notifies you when a new version is available. It does not install updates by itself unless you have turned that on in F-Droid.

What not to do

  • ❌ Do not trust re-hosted binaries
  • ❌ Do not install modified builds unless you audited the source

If in doubt, do not install.

  • Ask through the official project channels listed on the website
