Groups & Open Groups

Anonomi Messenger supports two types of group communication: private groups for trusted circles and open groups (forums) for broader communities.
Private groups
Section titled “Private groups”Private groups are invite-only spaces where all messages are end-to-end encrypted and synced peer-to-peer.
- Invite-only — only people you invite can join.
- Encrypted — all messages, media, and metadata are encrypted end-to-end.
- Peer-to-peer sync — messages sync directly between group members without passing through a central server.
Creating a private group
Section titled “Creating a private group”- Open the main navigation.
- Tap Create Group.
- Add contacts to the group.
- Give the group a name.
- Tap Create.
Managing members
Section titled “Managing members”The group creator can:
- Add new members by sending invitations.
- Remove members from the group.
Open groups (forums)
Section titled “Open groups (forums)”Open groups are public discussion spaces that anyone with an invitation link can join. They support threaded conversations for organized discussion.
- Invitation link — share a link to let anyone join.
- Threaded replies — reply to specific messages to keep discussions organized.
- Moderation — group creators can manage members and content.
Creating an open group
Section titled “Creating an open group”- Open the main navigation.
- Tap Create Group and select the forum option.
- Configure the group name and settings.
- Share the invitation link with participants.
Media support
Section titled “Media support”Both private groups and open groups support:
- Text messages
- Images — with optional text captions (see Text with Images)
- Voice messages — tap to record and send encrypted audio
- Location sharing — share offline map coordinates
Key behaviors
Section titled “Key behaviors”- Real-time sync — messages sync automatically when peers are connected.
- Offline support — compose messages offline; they are sent when connectivity is restored.
- Message retention — configure automatic message deletion per group (see Message Retention).
- Notifications — customize notification settings per group.
